ANTONIOLUPI

Where bathroom design approaches collectible art
Founded in Tuscany in 1950, antoniolupi occupies a rare position in bathroom design. Its collections are not conceived as isolated sanitary products, but as part of a complete interior that brings together washbasins, bathtubs, showers, furniture, mirrors, lighting, fireplaces and architectural surfaces. Every element can be coordinated, yet many of the individual pieces are strong enough to define the room on their own.
The washbasin collection shows most clearly what sets the brand apart. Silenzio, designed by Domenico de Palo, is built directly into the wall and finished with the same surface, leaving only a fluid opening and a line of light visible. Strappo follows a similar architectural idea, appearing as if a section of the wall has been pulled forward to reveal the basin behind it. In both cases, a familiar sanitary object almost disappears and becomes part of the architecture.
With Introverso, designed by Paolo Ulian, the process of making the object becomes part of its final appearance. A solid block of Carrara marble is cut by numerically controlled machinery into a sequence of thin vertical blades. Their edges can be broken by hand to reveal the basin concealed inside the original block. Controverso develops this research further, creating a marble washbasin whose surface can be progressively shaped and altered. These are functional objects, but their material presence places them much closer to sculpture than conventional sanitaryware.
Material research is another important part of antoniolupi’s identity. Alongside marble and natural stone, the company works with Flumood® and Colormood®, patented solid-surface materials that allow thin profiles, continuous forms and a wide choice of colours. Cristalmood®, a translucent coloured resin, gives washbasins and bathtubs the depth and changing reflections of glass while allowing more complex shapes. Products such as Albume, Borghi, Breeze and Reflex use transparency, colour and, in selected versions, integrated lighting to make water visible within the object.
The catalogue also includes products in Cristalplant®, wood, metal and glass, supported by advanced stone machining and highly specialised hand-finishing. This combination makes it possible to produce monolithic marble pieces, seamless integrated basins and furniture in customised dimensions and finishes. Customisation is treated as part of the design process rather than as a limited choice of colours added at the end.
Long-standing collaborations with designers such as Carlo Colombo, Mario Ferrarini, Paolo Ulian, Domenico de Palo, Gumdesign and AL Studio have produced a catalogue with distinct authorship but a recognisable identity. Concealed drainage, integrated light, apparently suspended volumes and unexpected relationships between water and material recur throughout the collection without becoming a fixed stylistic formula.
Produced in Italy and intended for highly considered interiors, antoniolupi is specified for exceptional private residences, villas, yachts and luxury hospitality projects. Few bathroom brands offer the same combination of architectural scope, material experimentation and bespoke production. Its most successful pieces do more than furnish the bathroom: they give it the presence and cultural value normally associated with collectible design.
