FLOS

Light as an object, an atmosphere and an architectural tool
Founded in Merano in 1962, Flos has played a decisive role in the development of modern lighting. Its history is closely linked to designers who have challenged established typologies, among them Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Tobia Scarpa, Philippe Starck, Jasper Morrison, Patricia Urquiola, Michael Anastassiades and the Bouroullec brothers.
Many Flos lamps have become reference points in design because they introduced genuinely new ways of using light. Arco brought overhead lighting into the room without requiring a ceiling connection, while Parentesi transformed the lamp into an adjustable element that travels vertically along a tensioned cable. Taccia, Snoopy and the early Cocoon designs explored reflected light, unexpected proportions and innovative materials, establishing a culture of experimentation that continues to shape the brand.
The decorative collection now covers suspension, ceiling, wall, floor, table and portable lighting. Some products have a strong sculptural presence, while others are reduced to discreet lines, points of light or precisely balanced structures. Across this diversity, Flos retains a recognisable attention to proportion, optical comfort and the relationship between the fitting and the space around it.
Beyond decorative lighting, Flos has developed a substantial range for architectural projects. The Tracking Magnet condenses tracks, magnetic fittings and control technology into a profile only 15 millimetres wide, available in recessed, surface-mounted and suspended versions. Spotlights, linear modules and pendant elements can be repositioned as layouts change, giving architects considerable freedom without introducing visually heavy infrastructure. Systems such as Light Shadow address glare control and visual comfort through dedicated optics, allowing light to remain precise while the fitting recedes into the ceiling.
The same technical depth extends outdoors, with solutions for façades, entrances, terraces, pathways, gardens and public spaces. These collections translate the brand’s design language into products engineered for exterior conditions, making it possible to develop a coherent lighting concept from the interior of a building into the surrounding landscape.
For retail, hospitality, residential and corporate projects, Flos Bespoke adapts existing products or develops made-to-order solutions, including special dimensions, finishes, optical configurations and high colour-rendering light sources. Traditional processes such as glassblowing are combined with advanced engineering and lighting control, allowing decorative character and technical performance to be developed as part of the same project.
Flos remains unusual in its ability to work convincingly at very different scales, from a portable lamp or a recognised design classic to an integrated architectural system. This breadth, supported by decades of collaboration and optical research, makes the brand equally relevant to interiors defined by a single expressive object and to complex projects requiring precise control of light throughout the building.
