Calligaris began in 1923 in Manzano, within the Italian district historically associated with chair production. What started as a small artisanal workshop has developed into an international furniture company, yet the chair remains central to its identity. Knowledge of ergonomics, joinery and material behaviour, refined over more than a century, continues to shape a collection designed for the realities of everyday life.

Today, the portfolio extends across the complete home. Chairs and stools are joined by dining tables, sofas, armchairs, beds, sideboards, bookcases, occasional furniture, mirrors, rugs and lighting. The pieces are conceived to work together through coordinated colours and finishes, making it possible to furnish the dining area, living room and bedroom within a consistent contemporary language.

The dining collection remains particularly strong. Calligaris offers an extensive choice of fixed and extendable tables, moving from compact formats for smaller interiors to sculptural models conceived for generous open-plan spaces. Their architectural bases are combined with tops in wood, glass or ceramic, while integrated extension systems allow the proportions of the table to change without compromising its appearance.

This long-standing research into movement and transformation is one of the company’s most relevant technical strengths. Calligaris continually develops and patents opening mechanisms that make large extensions easier to operate. Some tables transform from round to oval, while others use synchronized or assisted systems that bring concealed extensions into position through a single movement. Orbital, created with Pininfarina, opens automatically as two extensions rise simultaneously from beneath the top, while other designs can reach lengths of up to three metres.

Material choice gives the collection much of its versatility. Solid and veneered woods are protected through finishing cycles developed to preserve the grain and improve resistance to stains. Ceramic surfaces offer durability against heat, scratches and daily use, while glass, metal, polypropylene and polycarbonate introduce different degrees of transparency, colour and visual lightness. Upholstered seating can be configured in more than one hundred fabrics and leathers, ranging from quiet natural tones to richer textures and stronger colours.

The Made to Order programme develops this freedom further across many of the company’s most recognisable chairs. The model, upholstery and structure finish can be selected independently, with dozens of designs and around one hundred material options available. This gives architects and homeowners considerably more control over how seating relates to a table, kitchen, flooring or wider interior palette.

Calligaris has also moved decisively beyond its original dining-room focus. Recent collections introduce softer volumes and more flexible configurations across sofas, lounge chairs and beds, complemented by storage furniture with textured doors, sculptural fronts and carefully resolved details. The result is a broader vision of the home in which functional furniture, upholstered pieces and accessories share the same balance of comfort and visual clarity.

Collaborations with designers including Pininfarina, Archirivolto and Busetti Garuti Redaelli bring different perspectives to the collection, from technically complex tables to seating designed for both residential and contract use. Despite this diversity, the products remain recognisably Calligaris: contemporary without being severe, practical without appearing purely utilitarian, and adaptable enough to live comfortably in different types of interiors.
